Things to do for less than $10 in NYC

New Yorkers are hard-pressed to find anything affordable to do in the city. Even a casual dinner can run $30, $40 or $50+ if you’re including a few drinks. So I’m happy to share a few recent finds of things to do that cost less than going to a movie.

Upright Citizen’s Brigade – East Village

UCB East has improv, sketch and stand-up comedy 7 days a week, and many shows are either free or less than $10. If you’re feeling especially brave, there’s even a BYOT (bring your own improv team) with free participation on Mondays at 9:30pm.

We went to “If you build it: A stand up comedy show” which takes place weekly on Saturdays at 8:30pm. For just $5 you can check out up-and-coming comedians, many of whom have been featured on TV. While not everyone was a hit, we had some great laughs and there’s a reasonably-priced attached bar. What’s not to love?

NYC Dueling Pianos at Webster Hall

If you’re not already in-the-know, check out TheaterMania.com for amazing specials and discounts on NYC theater, concerts and cabaret. That’s where I found $10 tickets to Dueling Piano’s at Webster Hall, a request-based piano cabaret sing-along. Tickets are normally $20.

It was so much fun to scream sing our favorite oldies and mingle with the groups of Staten Island birthday parties and bachelorettes. Let’s just say it’s a mixed crowd; and we had a few laughs when the suburban moms started dancing table-top. $10 very well spent, indeed.

Skee ball at Ace Bar

Remember Chuck E. Cheese’s? Picture that, minus the big mouse & kiddies, plus booze & NYU hipsters, and you get Ace Bar. This neighborhood dive bar has skee ball, darts,  pinball and pool – so there’s a little something for everyone, if you can navigate past the undergrad coeds.

There is plenty of seating and space, so it’s a great spot for groups. Come earlier to avoid the inevitable college crew that seems to get messier by the minute. Unless you want to join them. 🙂
