Until recently, I hadn’t been to Battery Park since I was a kid. I forgot how beautiful and full of life it is! Battery Park has become my new favorite spot to be outside in NYC. The best part is, it’s only a twenty minute walk from my apartment in the Financial District.
Just a few of the many sites to see…
Lush gardens along the river with beautiful flowers, unique plants and WILLOW TREES! (my favorite). It hardly looks like you’re in NYC at all.
Monuments and memorials: It seems there’s an endless supply of monuments throughout the park. One that I find particularly striking is the American Merchant Mariners’ Memorial, which depicts merchant mariners in a sinking lifeboat.
Castle Clinton: Originally built to be a fort for the War of 1812, now offering guided tours. It’s also pretty nuts to see a historical stone fort in the middle of Manhattan.
Incredible views of the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
Prime people-watching: The New Yorker’s favorite past time at its best
Coming up in September, a human chain along the waterfront, stretching north from the tip of Manhattan, will take place to commemorate the 9/11 attacks. That will definitely be something to see. Find out more at http://www.handinhand911.org/.
